Being an avid guitar player and artist, I was very interested in having an well designed, and unique guitar. However, since i was a college student, the monetary setback of a new guitar purchase would have been overwhelming. With some motivation, access to some sheet metal, and a machine shop i was on my way.

I decided to create a new pick guard for my good old guitar, giving it a new look, for free! The pickguard that came with the guitar was a cheap black plastic, and was already scuffed up. Using a pair of electric sheet metal shears, a drill press, and a bunch of sandpaper I created my guitar's new look. I finished it off with a brushed aluminum texture, and a sand-blasted stripe down the center. Next I used the lathe to spin off 2 aluminum knobs, also sandblasted for texture.
Here is a little "before and after":

Another guitar project i worked on more recently was a bit more comical. I purchased a really old beat-up guitar on ebay hoping to fix it up. Unfortunately it was beyond repair, and even with new parts it was not much of an instrument. But just because it couldn't stay in tune or make nice sounds doesn't mean it couldn't ROCK! Erik and I got out some spraypaint and some masking tape and made the most american bad-ass guitar out of it. Check out the melodramatic images:
